At this time of year, a lot of people are coming back from holiday (or just time off work) and are trying to find that routine again. This can be more difficult than it sounds. Quite often, that lack of sparkle that is our mojo, can lead to tiredness, low moods and even boredom. So, here’s how to get your mojo back if getting revved up for work is proving difficult.
1. Fresh starts
Treat every day as a fresh start. It doesn’t matter how you got here or why; instead see each day as a new opportunity to change things.
Making the decision to change something always feels good. Mulling things over from yesterday or weeks ago, does nothing to help you in the ‘now’.
2. Routine
Getting back into a routine is good for the mind, body and soul whether it’s a business or personal routine. On holiday, there’s a lack of a ‘normal’ routine. While you might create a new routine, it’s one planned around the sun, trips and cocktail hour. It’s relaxed where you’re not thinking about work.
However, our bodies really do love routine. That’s why they always recommend them for babies.
So, now you’re back to work and ‘reality’ what can you restart?
- Exercise
- Journaling
- Meal plans
- Social media planning
- Networking
- Team meetings
3. Exciting goals
Setting exciting goals that have short deadlines are a great way to get motivated. You might want to look at a 90-day plan and setting specific things you want to achieve. For the goal to be exciting, you need to establish some great rewards.
E.g. “Increasing my turnover and improving profits by 20%” is great but you need to make sure you then add something like, “because then I can buy that brand new chair that’s going to allow me to work more efficiently and comfortably.”
If writing down your exciting goals isn’t enough, then you can also create a vision board and have the rewards in full view.
4. Rewards
Having goals and rewards is one thing but you can also book rewards for yourself and/or your team, simply so you have something to look forward to. It might be a meal out, a theatre visit, or a team-building experience. This way, when you return to work from your holiday, it won’t feel as if you’ve left all the fun behind and now your life is dull.
5. Make it fun
Our brains are hardwired for fun. We also like things that are nice and easy, which explains why Netflix binging is so tempting! So, when you set yourself an exciting goal, measure your progress in a fun way and make sure you celebrate all the little milestones in between. If we use the goal of increasing turnover by 20%, then celebrate the 5% growth and throw a little party at 10%.
A goal should never just be a dry thing on a piece of paper. How will you ever be motivated to achieve that?
6. Involve others
Whether you’re working by yourself or have a team, there is always someone for you to involve in your goal-setting and achievements. If you have a team, then it’s likely they will have lost their mojos if they’ve also had a fabulous summer. Remember, employees can still lose their sparkle, even if they love their jobs just like you can lose yours even though you love your business.
Working towards a common goal isn’t just great for the individual, it has great benefits for the team. It can bring people together, make them more focused and even make them more creative with solutions and problem solving.
If you work alone, then having a coach or a business network you can share your goals with, can have the same effect. Support for you and your business comes in many shapes and sizes and having accountability is a great way to keep you moving towards your goal.
7. Try something new
While routine is good, if you really want to get that sparkle back, then it might be a good idea to try something new. It doesn’t matter if it’s something new in business or a hobby you take up personally; either way it will have a positive effect on your business. When you feel good, you feel excited, and much more likely to have creative ideas.
This is also the time of year when all the courses start again so have a look in your local community education centre to see what’s out there. There’s always plenty of online courses so sit down and think what you’d like to learn or try your hand at.
But remember, if you’re finding it tough to rediscover that sparkle, you simply might need a little bit of support. That’s where a coach like me can help.
